Principal’s Address
Principal’s Message
As Term 3 draws to a close, we have much to celebrate and reflect upon. This term has been filled with remarkable achievements, memorable events, and the hard work of both students and staff.
A special mention goes to Tegan Pense, who as part of the Elevate Gymnastics Academy has qualified for the 2024 Gymnastics WA Country Team and will be attending the upcoming 2024 Bigham Cup held in Kingston, Tasmania from 6th – 7th September. Tegan trains for 9 hours a week throughout the year and qualified in the top 6 gymnasts of her level to earn herself a position on the WA team. Her dedication and hard work are commendable, and we are incredibly proud of her achievements.
Our Science Department again hosted a fantastic STEM Fair in Week 6 which showcased an array of innovative student work, projects, and demonstrations. Several industries also joined us for the day along with visits from 8 local Primary schools who thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The creativity and dedication of our students and staff was truly inspiring, making the event a resounding success. A heartfelt thanks to STEM Fair coordinator Elouise Gaylard and all the staff involved in organising such an amazing day.
We still have several exciting events to look forward to at the end of this term, including our NAIDOC Assembly and celebration in Week 9, Year 12 Leavers Assembly, and our annual Battle of the Knights in Week 10. We encourage you to join us for all or some of these events if you can.
At the end of this term, we bid farewell to our Year 12 students. Whether they are heading into their ATAR exams, further training, or employment, we wish them the best of luck and hope that they look back on their time at our school with affection. We look forward to hearing their stories and celebrating their future successes so please keep in touch!
Our staff have worked tirelessly throughout the term, ensuring that our students receive the best education and support. Their commitment and passion are the backbone of our school’s success, and it has been a privilege to work alongside them as Principal this term.
As we look forward to Term 4, we anticipate more exciting opportunities and achievements. I encourage you to enjoy the holidays, take time to relax with friends and family, and come back refreshed and ready for the new term.
Wishing everyone a wonderful break and looking forward to seeing you all in Term 4!

Contributions and Charges
A big thank you goes out to all parents and caregivers who have paid contributions and charges in full. We really appreciate your commitment to our school.
Reminder accounts are currently being emailed out to parents who have an outstanding balance on their child’s contributions and charges.
It is government policy that parents should contribute towards the cost of educating their children. As all students benefit from the pool of collected subject costs, it is fair to expect that all parents should pay the balance of contributions and charges.
Do you need more time to pay?
Payment plans are available to all parents/caregivers. These can be started anytime during the year. Payments can continue through the school holiday periods and even into the following year. If paying a small amount each fortnight or month suits your budget better, then this is a good option. Parents set the amount and frequency of payments to suit your family budget.

Lower School Deputy Principals’ Update
As we draw nearer to the end of Term 3, it is essential to stay focused right up to the finish line.
Our dedicated teachers continue to deliver high-quality lessons, ensuring that our students receive the best possible education. Attending school every day and arriving to class on time are the keys to staying on top of your learning and achieving your best.
We've had a lot happening since the last issue, particularly with our lower school students. Our Year 9 students have been fortunate to participate in the "Try a Trade" program at TAFE and explore the ECU South Bunbury campus. These experiences are crucial as they begin to make decisions about their future career paths.
Our Year 7 and 8 athletes recently attended the Lightning Carnival, where they proudly represented NMSHS and showcased their talent and school spirit. In addition, we held our Awards Assembly, where we celebrated the achievements of students who have gone above and beyond in their efforts.
A special highlight this term was the Science Department's annual STEM Fair. The event was a great success, with industry experts and our feeder primary schools in attendance. It was a fantastic opportunity to showcase the innovative work of our students.
As we wind up the term, there are still exciting events to look forward to. Our cadets will be heading out on a weekend camp, immersing themselves in nature. We also have the Shining Knights Reward, PBS Award, and the always fun-filled Battle of the Knights Day to close out the term. We can’t wait to see you all there!
Keep up the great work, and let's finish Term 3 strong.
Senior School Deputy Principals’ Update
With only a few weeks left before we bid farewell to our Year 12 students, there is plenty to look forward to. We have several special events planned to celebrate their achievements and send them off in style. The Year 12 Dinner, Fun Day, Final Assembly, and Graduation Ceremony are all on the horizon. We strongly encourage all Year 12 students to attend these events, as they are truly once-in-a-lifetime experiences.
Our Year 11 students continue to work hard towards achieving their WACE. The effort they put in now will make their Year 12 journey much smoother. We remind Year 11’s to stay on top of their studies and ensure they are meeting their goals, particularly aiming for those crucial C grades or higher.
Year 10 students have completed their subject selections for Year 11. If there is any uncertainty,
we encourage you to reach out to the school to discuss your options. With so many opportunities available, we want to ensure no student misses out. Remember, the effort you put in now will significantly enhance your experience in Years 11 and 12.
A good habit to develop is dedicating an hour each day to homework or study. Even if you have no immediate homework, use the time to review for upcoming tests, revisit your notes from the day, or practice concepts. Repetition is key to embedding knowledge into your long-term memory.
OLNA Update for Year 11 and 12:
Our Year 11 and 12 students have completed their final round of OLNA assessments for 2024. We will share the results with students as soon as they become available, so please keep an eye out for any updates.

Attendance
Attendance Matters!
MISSING SCHOOL MEANS MISSING OUT!
Regular attendance builds lots of other skills, not just learning. Schools help children to develop important social skills, such as friendship building, teamwork, communication skills and a healthy self-esteem. It also helps them to participate positively in regular school events that promote strong community spirit.
Students are deemed to be ‘at risk’ by the Department of Education if their attendance is below 90%
If your child attends 90% of the time, they would be missing:
- 1 day a fortnight
- 1 week a term
- 4 weeks a year

STEM Fair
The 2024 STEM Fair held on 21st August was a huge success showing once again that Science Technologies and Maths continues to thrive at Newton Moore SHS.
New activities this year included Aus Earth Ed a Chevron STEM outreach where students learnt to code a mini-bot and use augmented reality to view native animals, Chamber of Minerals and Energy mini coding robots including mining machinery, Nearer to Nature with a variety of native species for students to interact with and our own lab tech who demonstrated some whizz bang chemistry with "elephant’s toothpaste".
We thank our industry partners Illuka, Monadelphous, Doral, ECU, Tronox, Bricktopia, AusEarthEd partnered by Chevron, AusIMM, RCR Engineering, Chamber of Minerals and Energy and Nearer to Nature from Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions. These industry partners provide insight into STEM careers for our students and the wider community who attended on the day including 8 primary school groups, consisting of over 250 primary students.
Aus Earth Ed/Chevron Incursion
Recently the Year 10 Powering Careers in Energy students have been investigating energy. As part of these studies, we had a visit from Australian Earth Science Education (AusEarthEd) on Friday August 23. The students took part in some hands-on activities and learned about energy grids and the formation of, and exploration for, oil and gas. Thanks to AusEarthEd and their STEM Outreach Partner, Chevron Australia, for this opportunity.
VET
Work Experience Winds up for our Year 12s
Our talented Year 12 VET students have reached the end of their final school year having attended many interesting and varied work experience placements as part of their Workplace Learning Program.
This experience has not only armed students with necessary employability skills, but for some has lead to traineeships, apprenticeships and paid work as a result of successful placements.
We are very lucky to have such supportive employers in our community who are willing to host and guide our students.
Well done to all our Year 12 WPL students for the effort and commitment you have put into your work experience placements over the past two years.

Career Excursion- 'Try a Trade' At TAFE
'Try a Trade'- WOW What a day!
A group of Year 9 and 10 students had an awesome opportunity to engage and participate in hands-on mini activities in the fields of Bricklaying, Carpentry, Electrotechnology and Painting and Decorating at the South Regional TAFE on Monday 26th August.
All students thoroughly enjoyed the day! Student quotes….
"Today was fun because I learnt heaps."
"I liked it all, but my favourite was the electrical one"
"I enjoyed all the trades, but carpentry was my favourite'
"The experience was really awesome seeing how things are built and operated"
"Try a trade is a great experience for anyone looking into the construction business"
"Try a trade, was great and a very fun experience!"
"I really enjoyed going to TAFE today and learnt heaps." "My favourite trade was either electrical or bricklaying."
"Four trades, fun day!"
Thank you to our School Chaplin Phil, Trainee Abby and Ms Audino for attending the day.
University- Edith Cowan University (ECU)
On Wednesday, 4th September, students in Year 9 and 10 had the opportunity to visit our local University. The day involved two groups, one attending in the morning and the other in the afternoon. Students engaged in sessions about Cyber Security and a Campus Adventure activity like the Amazing Race. This was great to allow students to explore and become familiar with the campus and learn about coding. Students had to ‘crack the code’ to the magic box to receive ‘treasure’. Students also had the opportunity to learn about university life, pathways, and a variety of courses.
A special thank you to Mr Leenman (School Chaplin), Ms Audino (Career Practitioner) for attending. A special mention to Abby Rogers and Jeannette Kundi (Student Captains), Riharna Myles (Student Executive) and Ruby Penny (Year 12 student), who were there to investigate Uni options for themselves, but also volunteered on the day to support the excursion.
Congratulations to all students who attended and represented our school in a positive manner. It was a pleasure to see you all engaged and thinking about your futures!
Grant for Defence Industry Schools Pathways Program - Funding Application Outcome
Recently our school was informed that we were successful in its grant application for an amount of $5,000, and 6 days of relief to go toward Defence Industry. Planning and a subcommittee are currently underway. Watch this space for 2025….
Mock Interviews for Year 10/11s
Over the past month, students who have shown an interest in attending TAFE in 2025 have applied for their course preferences and may be invited for an interview with regards to their course selections. The school wishes all the students who are successful in being offered an interview - ‘good luck’.
Thank you to Forrest Personnel and Jobs and Skills Centre staff for supporting our students by providing supportive and constructive feedback!
What’s next?

Clontarf Legend of the Month
Jett Supple
Jett is now into his third Term with us as a Year 7 student and remarkably only missed three days of school all year. Jett is actively involved in many of our Clontarf events and loves grabbing a footy at every break for a kick with his mates. Jett always upholds the Clontarf values, and we are looking forward to having a great time with him over his schooling journey. Keep on being a legend Jett!!
Yarning Circle
Our yarning circle recently got a make-over by the students from Year 7,8 and 10 Living and Leading Girls and Boys, under the supervision of AIED Glen. It’s looking amazing – well done! We can’t wait to see it in action as part of the NAIDOC week celebrations.
Clontarf
As this is the last newsletter before graduation, we would like to acknowledge our amazing Year 12 group - Clontarf Captain Sheldon Collard, Vice-Captain Caleb Holzapefel, Michael Winder, Ayden Noakes, Axel Nelson, Blake Freeman, Tyde O’Dine and Jake O’Dine. They will be the largest graduating group our academy has seen and are fantastic role models for the academy. We are looking forward to assisting them transition into employment.
Recently an IT Discovery Camp was held in Perth. This camp was designed to engage and excite boys who may not want to attend a regular Clontarf camp that is dominated by sport. The fellas visited Clontarf Partner Lycopodium Engineering for a site tour, the Perth Zoo, Murdoch University, and the Nostalgia Box Gaming Museum. All the boys where exceptionally well behaved and a big thanks to Clontarf staff Steve and Cammy for going the extra mile to make this camp special.
A key focus for Term 3 has been to assist our eligible boys on their driving journey. With assistance from the Road Safety Commission, we have booked regular driving lessons for Nine students along with helping them book and complete Hazard Perception tests and Practical Driving assessments.
We are also excited to be hosting a Football Match as part of the school NAIDOC celebrations on Wednesday 11 September at 3.30pm. The game is for our boys, families, school staff and Clontarf partners, so all are welcome to participate and enjoy a BBQ after the match.
