DET Approved Specialist Programs: Science
Academic Specialist programs
Newton Moore SHS has two Department of Education Approved Specialist Programs: Science Horizons and Engineering Specialist. They are academic extension programs where students feel safe to be themselves, are challenged in an innovative environment, work as members of teams and are given opportunities to demonstrate leadership and achieve success along many pathways.
The programs are committed to enable students to achieve personal excellence, be successful 21st century life-long learners and to be active citizens of the local and global community. It aims to accelerate and extend students to improve their performance and enhance university entrance acceptance into science related courses.
High achieving students are grouped with students of similar outstanding talents in science and other core learning areas.
Selection is based on a written application, entry test, teacher recommendation, grades and systemic results from NAPLAN and MSE tests. Scholarships are available.
Science Horizons
Program outline and benefits:
- Continuation of the district’s PEAC Science, Technology and English program.
- Freshwater and Marine Managers Program involving dolphin, mangrove and wetland research.
- Participation in Science Research Projects.
- Assist in running the community STEM fair
- Partnerships with international schools in Singapore, Japan and Indonesia.
- Link to Wetlands Web offer extended opportunities across all Science disciplines.
- Construct site about the wetlands as entries in the University of Sydney Eureka Schools Prize for Biological Sciences.
- Opportunities to represent Western Australia at Australian Science Fair.
- Scholarships provided by our Industry and Community partners.

Engineering Specialist program
Program outline and benefits:
- Continuation of the district’s PEAC Science, Technology and English program.
- Participation in Science Research Projects.
- Assist in running the community STEM fair.
- Partnerships with international schools in Singapore, Japan and Indonesia.
- Curriculum covers fields of engineering such as Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical and Electronics, Civil and Architectural, Robotic and Environmental.
- Hands on projects include robotics with programing, electronics, F1 car production using CAD, Human Powered Vehicle production and racing, bridge structures, solar cars and sustainable projects like recycling plastics with our BeH machine and then fracturing the fuel produced.
- Opportunities to represent Western Australia at Australian Science Fair.
- Scholarships provided by our Industry and Community partners.
